We're investing in Jersey's mobile network to make everyday connections easier and more dependable. This work includes introducing 5G alongside our existing technologies, improving coverage and capacity across the island, and creating a platform that can support the latest digital services.

Preparing for the new network

As part of this major infrastructure project, engineers are carrying out planned works across the island to lay the foundation for the upgraded network. This includes:

  • Replacing old masts and infrastructure with new technology
  • Installing equipment to introduce 5G alongside existing mobile technologies
  • Improving coverage and capacity across the island

When complete, the upgraded network will make everyday connections smoother and more reliable, supporting modern usage and growing digital demand.

3G network switch-off – what you need to know

As part of the network upgrade, from August onwards 3G will be switched off. For most customers, your service will continue as normal. The majority of phones and devices already support 4G, so calls, texts and mobile data will keep working.

Some customers may need to update their device settings or upgrade their device to stay connected to the internet.

We're here to support you every step of the way. Here's everything you need to know to stay connected.

What to expect

Most of the works happen quietly in the background. In areas where upgrades are underway, there may be temporary reductions in coverage or service.

We'll keep this page updated with the latest on the works and where they're happening, so you can check progress and any changes in your area.

If you need help with your device or service, our team is available in-store or over the phone to offer support and answer any questions.

Thank you for your patience while these important upgrades are completed. This work is laying the foundation for a future-ready network that will support the island’s digital needs for years to come.

FAQ: 5G network and planned upgrade works

Why are there upgrade works happening?

We're improving the mobile network to bring faster, more reliable connections with 5G technology. As part of this, our engineers are carrying out planned works to prepare the new network for launch.

How will these works affect my service?

While most of this work happens in the background, in some areas where upgrades are underway there may be temporary reductions in coverage or service.

Check the site map for the latest on the works and where they're happening.

How will the new network benefit me?

The upgraded network will bring faster connections, improved coverage in more places, and better performance at busy times, helping you stay connected whether you're at home or on the move.

Are you putting up more masts to support the new network?

No. The network upgrade will mean fewer mobile masts overall. Following the integration of Airtel's network into Sure's, the number of mobile sites required for the new combined network is expected to be about one third fewer than before. This is because the separate networks, each with their own equipment, are being consolidated into a single modern network, which is more efficient and does not need duplicate infrastructure to cover the same areas.

I moved to Sure from Airtel. Will I benefit from the new network?

Yes. Customers who joined Sure from Airtel will be able to benefit from improved performance and reliability.

Will my plan or pricing change?

No. This upgrade does not change your plan or pricing.

Do I need to do anything to get 5G when it becomes available?

If your phone is already 5G-capable and your plan supports 5G, you won't usually need to do anything. Your device should connect automatically when you're in an area with 5G coverage. Most modern smartphones sold in the last few years support 5G.

Why might I still see 4G instead of 5G?

Even with a 5G-capable phone, you will only connect to 5G where coverage is available. If 5G isn't available in your area or your plan doesn't include it, your phone will continue to use 4G. Most recent phones automatically switch between 4G and 5G as needed.

Will 5G replace 4G and other technologies?

No. As part of upgrading the mobile network, the number of sites is expected to reduce by around one third. This is because Airtel and Sure networks are being combined into a single, more efficient network without duplicated infrastructure.

Do I have to update my phone settings for 5G?

Typically no. Most phones connect to 5G automatically if your plan and device support it. If you're unsure about your specific phone, we can help you check your settings.

Are older phones affected by these upgrades?

Older phones that don't support 5G will continue to work on 4G or earlier technologies. To benefit from the new network's full performance, customers will need a 5G-capable device. Most phones released in recent years already support 5G.

How to check if your phone supports 5G

1. Find your phone's model number

  • Phones with a removable battery often have the model number on a sticker under the battery.
  • You can also use your IMEI number: dial *#06# to get your IMEI, then enter it at IMEI.info to find your phone's model.

2. Look up your phone model online

  • Go to GSM Arena and search for your phone's make and model number.
  • Expand the Network section – if there's a 4G Bands section, your phone works with 4G.
What is happening to 3G?

From June onwards, 3G will be switched off as we prepare to launch our new mobile network. Most customers won't be affected, as the majority of devices already support 4G, so calls, texts and mobile data will continue as normal.

If your device relies on 3G, you may need to update your settings to connect to 4G. Devices that only support 2G and 3G will still be able to make calls and send texts, but mobile data will be limited. We recommend upgrading to a 4G or 5G-capable device to get the best experience.

Is 5G safe?

Yes. 5G operates within internationally recognised safety guidelines, just like existing mobile networks. These standards are set by independent organisations and are designed to protect public health.
