The magic touch for the Sure Scorpions team sponsorship
As part of our commitment to support local sports, we’re sponsoring touch rugby team the Sure Scorpions. Through this three-year sponsorship deal, which began in 2021, we’re funding their kit and team registration fees which as a result aids Rovers Football Club, where they play each Wednesday evening during the Summer.
The Sure Scorpions is the latest sponsorship in a line-up of six sports: running, hockey, swimming events, volleyball, touch rugby and cycling.
Set up in 2021, the Sure Scorpions is a team that diversifies the experienced players in the men’s league with newer players who were only previously playing mixed in the corporate league.
In the first season, the Sure Scorpions finished in 2nd place, exceeding expectations. In this year’s KPMG Touch Summer League 2022 they achieved another personal best, going on to win the league title.
Oliver Ward, Sure Scorpion team member and Sure employee, said: “All of the Scorpions are very grateful for Sure’s sponsorship. It enables us to compete in the league for three years, with the best-looking kit!”
Justin Bellinger, Guernsey Chief Executive at Sure, said: “Many of our staff like Oliver are passionate about sport and play for local clubs, so we’re keen to support his team and touch rugby in Guernsey. Supporting local sports is very important to us which is why we’re the technology partner at the Guernsey 2023 NatWest International Island Games. We’ll be supplying the latest broadband and mobile technology to local sports venues as well as enhancing the connectivity for spectators and visiting competitors.”
As its name suggests, touch rugby involves contact made with only minimal force. Locally, touch rugby first started to be played on a regular basis in 2004. Since then, the sport has grown year on year and through the hard work and dedication of the committee and the enthusiasm shown by all the players, touch rugby is now one of the island's fastest-growing sports and can be played by men and women of all ages and abilities.
There are around 300 individual players playing in the KPMG Summer League this year including the Sure Scorpions. The touch rugby games take place at Rovers Football Club on Wednesday nights.
