Sure goes the extra mile for those in need
Sure has introduced some new initiatives to this year’s Sure Guernsey Marathon, to minimise the impact of the race on our local environment and help those in need.
Sure, the race’s headline sponsor, is using the principles of circular economy by setting up a sports clothing donation scheme during the month of the marathon, encouraging the public to donate their old and no-longer-used running clothes and shoes to those in need.
The donated clothing will be taken to Turi in Kenya, with the help of the Elizabeth College Kenya Expedition, for their trip in June. The expedition is organised yearly for Elizabeth College students to work alongside the Turi community on projects and construction; they also donate essentials to the residents of Turi.
Anyone can donate unneeded sports kit, in child and adult sizes, in the Sure shop throughout April.
The marathon t-shirts are being printed by a local company that does not individually wrap the clothing in plastic, reducing as much waste as possible. The runners can collect the shirts at the beginning, and after the event and all the uncollected t-shirts will be donated.
Mike Fawkner-Corbett, Head of Consumer at Sure and Guernsey Marathon runner, said: “Creating a greener marathon and leaving behind the legacy of care and commitment is important to Sure. We’re happy to be working closely with the Elizabeth College Turi Expedition to help people in need. Please visit the Sure shop to donate your unneeded kit to a worthy cause.”
The clothing donation will run for the month of April in the Sure High Street Store.
