The Sure Community Foundation has made a donation to fund the restoration of Bright Beginnings’ play area, after the nursery was vandalised in December last year.
The Foundation had also been looking for a way to support Grow, a local charity which provides horticulturally based work for people with learning disabilities. The chance to help Bright Beginnings involved Grow constructing new planters to replace the damaged containers and rebuilding decking. All funds will go towards Grow’s annual operating costs. Grow’s team have also filled the new the planters with fresh compost and spring plants.
Sure Community Foundation committee member Sophie Osborne said: “We were upset to hear of the damage caused to Bright Beginnings due to mindless vandalism. The Foundation is designed to improve the lives of Guernsey residents, so fixing the nursery’s broken facilities was an easy decision. As we were already looking for ways to partner with Grow, the opportunity to help two good causes at once was a fantastic bonus.”
Darren Brehaut, Workshop Senior Supervisor at Grow, said: “After working with Sophie to see how Grow could best benefit from the Sure Community Foundation’s sponsorship, we were pleased to put the donation to good use by making up new planters and decking at Bright Beginnings. Our Crew hate to see vandalism and were happy to be involved in replacing the damaged parts of the nursery’s garden after their senseless destruction. We love giving back to the community, which is why Grow has also donated compost and viola plants to the nursery so the children can plant a spring display of flowers.”
Nursery Manager at Bright Beginnings Karyn Le Marquand said: “We are so grateful to the Sure Community Foundation for funding these repairs and to Grow for carrying out the work. The children have not been able to use the stage and wooden houses, which they’ve really missed. We’re delighted that the generosity of others will improve our children’s day-to-day enjoyment of our facilities.”
