Rovers football coach wins 2021 Sports Volunteer of the Year award

Sponsoring the Sports Volunteer of the Year in the Pride of Guernsey awards means we can highlight local sports coaches and supporters to give them the recognition they deserve.

The awards are an annual fixture in the Guernsey calendar and recognise exceptional contributions to island life. The sports volunteer award commends the efforts of volunteers who work tirelessly to make community sport happen.

Sure’s Karen Jagger presented the worthy winner, Rovers AC coach, Barry Moroney with the Sports Volunteer of the Year award at this year’s Pride of Guernsey Awards.

The winner, Barry, was nominated for his twelve years of coaching children at Rovers football club. His nominator James Falla described him as an “inspiration” and said: “He is firm but fair, unfailingly supportive of anything done the right way, and his ethos of inclusion has served the team and the club extremely well. Many players have flourished under Barry’s care when otherwise they could have easily been lost and ended up quitting football”.

Karen said: “Sport is an important part of Guernsey life so we look to help our local sports people wherever we can. This can be from supporting a small touch rugby or volleyball team to being the technology partner for the 2023 Island Games. So we were delighted to present this accolade to such a deserving winner as Barry and would like to once again congratulate him”.
