Books, musicals and heroes are on the line-up for Sure Big Screen

The Sure Big Screen returns this week showcasing a wide variety of films including a showing of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society ahead of its release on DVD.

The popular family event features a different theme each day including film adaptations of books, superheroes, musicals and the people’s choice of classic films celebrating anniversaries in 2018.

A musicals day on Friday 20 July will kick off the 2018 event with Pixar’s Coco at 2.30pm. Grease fans need to get their singing voices ready for a special singalong version of the film which is on at 5.30pm and the day closes with the 2017 smash hit The Greatest Showman at 7.30pm starring Hugh Jackman.

Saturday 21 July is one for the superheroes with films dedicated to heroes and villains. The day starts with our favourite family of undercover superheroes The Incredibles at 2.30pm, followed by the popular Lego Ninjago at 5.15pm and closing with award winning Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi at 7.30pm.

A day dedicated to books turned into feature films is on the show reel for Sunday 22 July with four films being shown throughout the day. At 1pm children’s favourite Winnie the Pooh will be on the big screen and at just 63 minutes long it’s perfect for little ones. Paddington 2 will be on at 2.30pm followed by the 2018 adaptation of Peter Rabbit at 5.15pm which is being shown before it hops onto DVD on 23 July.

Sunday closes with The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society at 7.30pm specially secured by Sure from Studio Canal before the film is released on DVD later in the summer. Slices of Guernsey Gâche will be on offer for viewers to enjoy during the film. For the first time islanders have chosen which films will be shown on Monday 23 July via polls on Sure’s Facebook page. Family favourite Finding Nemo received 66% of votes and will kick off the day at 2.30pm.

Musical-comedy School of Rock, starring Jack Black, obtained 61% of votes and will be shown at 5.15pm and everyone’s favourite pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow, from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl took a huge 74% of the votes and will close this year’s Big Screen event at 7.30pm. Attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favourite superhero or villain on Saturday and their favourite book character on Sunday with a number of great prizes up for grabs including a Nintendo Switch for the best dressed. To enter the competition visitors will need to upload a picture of themselves in fancy dress at the Sure Big Screen to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using #SureBigScreen.

Emily Field, marketing and PR manager at Sure, said: “We’re so pleased to have secured a box office line-up for this summer’s Sure Big Screen. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society film is going to be a real highlight of this year’s event and we’re hoping for a record crowd down at Cobo. “Islanders have always been extremely enthusiastic about the Sure Big Screen so we wanted to give them the chance to get involved in selecting the line-up with the people’s choice day. We think they’ve done a great job and have picked three films that everyone will enjoy.”
